Where to get help

Domestic abuse can take the form of physical, sexual or mental and emotional abuse perpetrated by either a partner or ex-partner.

Getting help for domestic abuse

You may have been threatened about what would happen if you ever told anyone about the domestic abuse or tried to leave. That you'd be found wherever you went, that your children might be taken from you, or even that your children and you would be killed.

People don’t realise how difficult it is to get out of an abusive situation. There are lots of things that can keep you from leaving; fear, worries about money, about where you'll end up, about letting people down, about how you'll cope on your own, about how it will affect your children.

There is help available, from people who understand what you've been going through and won't blame you or judge you. They will help you make the right choice for you.

If you have a close friend or family member they may also be worried about you and be able to help. Work colleagues may also be happy to give you support.
